Santa Barbara News-Press · June 17, 1963

A 16-year-old “Sandy” suspect, quizzed in Santa Ana today by two sheriff’s detectives about the slaying of three Lompoc residents, has been cleared, Sheriff James W. Webster reported.

The boy, held in Orange County Juvenile Hall, fitted the description authorities have of a youth known only as Sandy.

He was questioned intensively last night and today about the June 3 knife murder of Vern Charles Smith, 63, of Miguelito Canyon. Two other teen-age boys in custody here said “Sandy” stabbed Smith near his trailer home and that they took $360 from him.

“Sandy” is also a possible suspect according to the sheriff, in the slayings of Linda Edwards, 17, and Robert Domingos, 18, of Lompoc on a lonely beach June 4. A .22 caliber weapon was used in this apparently random killing.
