Women Are Made for Laughing
A female writer complains about male comics who make a living making fun of their supposedly gauche wives, ugly mothers-in-law and idiot girl friends.
Female comics, she says, must play the role of ugly duckling or half-wit in order to get laughs.
The real uglies of course are the ones who don’t make a living at it: the average American housewife who prowls the public streets with her hair in rollers and her stretch pants defying all laws of container control.
There is absolutely nothing funny about them.
Ethnic jokes are out, political jokes are nothing to laugh about and now females are urged in print to protest against being the butts of all jokes.
Let’s face it. With marriages the way they are today, if you couldn’t laugh at yourself, you’d spend all your hours crying.
Me, I’ll just keep right on laughing with you.
